Founded in 1836, New Philadelphia is the first known town planned and legally registered by an African American in the United States. Town founder Frank McWorter used his earnings to purchase 16 family members out of slavery, and the town became a stop on the Underground Railroad. The site of this racially diverse community is now the New Philadelphia National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service.
